Avalanche Hits Train in Far East

KHABAROVSK, Far East — An avalanche in the Khabarovsk region derailed a train carrying 275 passengers late Sunday night, the Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement.

A train from Vladivostok to the Far Eastern coastal town of Sovetskaya Gavan was hit by an avalanche around 11.20 p.m., causing the first section of the train to derail, the ministry said on its website. No injuries were reported.

All passengers were later transported to the Tumnin station, where they were given hot meals and water.

Emergency workers said 138 people were involved in the cleanup and rescue operation, Interfax reported, citing the emergency situations ministry. At 6.12 a.m. train service was restored.
