Brazil has become the first country to host part of Russia’s global satellite navigation system, known as GLONASS.
The Brazilian space agency said it will operate the Brazilian component in coordination with the Russian space agency Roscosmos. It is based at the University of Brasilia.
GLONASS is described as a counterpart of the Global Positioning System (GPS) maintained by the United States government.
The systems provide Earth location information to people who have a receiver to contact the systems.
Brazilian space agency president Jose Raimundo Coelho said the partnership with Russia will help train Brazilian professionals and improve the accuracy of GLONASS.
He said the Russian system could also be used by the University of Brasilia to conduct research.
