Moscow has filed a formal request with the Ukrainian authorities for the extradition of two suspects in the recent killing of 12 people in southern Russia. If the extradition request is granted all the alleged murderers will be face justice, an Investigative Committee representative said on Thursday.

The launch of an unmanned lander to one of the Martian moons has been slated for November 2011. The Phobos-Grunt probe will be sent to the surface of Phobos, and then return to Earth with soil samples.

Colombia landslide kills 27
Rescue workers have pulled out another victim of Sunday’s mudslide in northwestern Colombia, bringing the overall death toll to 27. Workers and neighbors are using earthmovers, picks and shovels to dig through the mud, after a sodden hillside collapsed on Sunday burying 50 homes in Bello town, near the Antioquia province’s capital Medellin.

Seoul rattled by North Korea’s nuclear activity
South Korea is alarmed by what it sees as heightened activity at North Korea ’s main nuclear test range, which Pyongyang apparently knows will be registered by US satellites. The Seoul-based Dong-a Ilbo newspaper reports that the North may be readying a silo for an underground nuclear test at Puengri.
