Chechen Diaspora Figure Killed in Turkey

ANKARA, May 23 (RIA Novosti) – Medet Unlu, a businessman and prominent figure in Turkey’s Chechen diaspora, has been killed in Ankara, according to media reports.

Local media reported that Unlu, a Turkish citizen of Chechen origin, was shot dead in his office shortly after 7 pm local time on Wednesday.

Unlu was a critic of the Chechen government, and the Anatolia News Agency cites his relatives as saying that he “suffered oppression” by the Chechen authorities.

Chechen head Ramzan Kadyrov’s spokesman told RIA Novosti “we have not heard of anyone by that name.”

Unlu’s body is expected to be released for burial on Friday, according to local media reports.

Unlu presented himself as the “honorary consul” of the unrecognized, self-proclaimed secessionist Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.

Turkish police have launched an investigation into the killing, local media report.
