Giraffe Calf Born at Russian Zoo

KALININGRAD, February 25 (RIA Novosti) – A giraffe calf was born at a zoo in Kaliningrad, Russia’s exclave on the Baltic Sea, a zoo spokesman said on Monday.

Iva, a ten-year old giraffe, gave birth to the calf on February 22. The calf is being bottle fed due to complications during delivery, the spokesman said.

According to him, it’s both difficult and dangerous to nurse the two-meter (6.5 feet) tall calf, and several zookeepers must join forces to feed the newborn giraffe, which is staying with its mother.

Giraffe calves need milk in the first two or three months and then gradually switch to a vegetarian diet.
