Greek Police Detain Woman on Russian Child Kidnap Charges

ATHENS, January 26 (RIA Novosti) – Greek police have detained a 58-year old woman, they believe is wanted by the Russian authorities for kidnapping and selling children, a spokesman for the Greek police in Thessaloniki told RIA Novosti on Saturday.

The police spokesman said that the woman is wanted on numerous charges including kidnapping minors, and in connection with several attempts to sell children and transport them out of Russia illegally. She was also in Greece without a visa, he added.

The police spokesman could not confirm whether or not the woman is a Russian national, although he was confident that she was born in Georgia. She is accused of crimes that were carried out in Russia’s Krasnodar Territory.

The Russian Consul General in Thessaloniki told RIA Novosti that “neither the individual under arrest, nor the Greek authorities have contacted us so far.”
