Presidential Vote Kicks Off in Ex-Soviet Georgia

TBILISI/MOSCOW, October 27 (RIA Novosti) – Voters in Georgia headed to the polls Sunday to elect a replacement for outgoing president Mikheil Saakashvili, who is leaving office after two terms at the helm of the small former Soviet nation. Saakashvili rose to power on the back of a popular uprising in 2003 and earned massive popularity by pursuing an aggressive anticorruption campaign, but has latterly lost his appeal, in part since a disastrous war with Russia in 2008.
