Russia and Arab League propose to engage on Syria

Russia and the Arab League have proposed brokering direct talks in a bid to end the Syrian civil war. It comes as the opposition Syrian National Coalition is due to begin a two-day meeting in Egypt to discuss a framework for a possible solution. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the violence was ‘a road to mutual destruction’. Moscow still keeps close ties with the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, and has so far refused to halt military cooperation with Damascus.
