Russian Metal Legend Seeks to Become Moscow Mayor Candidate

MOSCOW, June 14 (RIA Novosti) – Russian metal legend Sergei “Spider” Troitsky on Friday filed for registration as a candidate in the Moscow Mayor elections due on September 8, a spokesman for Moscow’s election authority said.

Spider is a genuine rock veteran, the sole remaining member of thrash/heavy metal legends Korroziya Metalla, whose first album, 1988’s The Order of Satan, was released on the group’s own label after its no-holds barred content proved too hot to handle for even perestroika-era record companies.

“Sergei Troitsky has just submitted his request. So, at the moment, five candidates have applied for registration,” the spokesman said.

He added that Troitsky applied for registration as an independent candidate.

Troitsky has also dabbled in politics before, but with little success. He was set to run for Moscow mayor in 1993 on the ticket of Radical Party of firebrand writer Eduard Limonov, but the vote was canceled because of a bloody failed putsch in the capital. In 1998, Troitsky run for the State Duma in Moscow, but his victory was annulled on a technicality.

Last year, he ran for mayor of the city of Khimki near Moscow, where he garnered about 2.5 percent of the vote. In late March, he took part in mayor elections in another Moscow Region city, Zhukovsky, where he finished with a similar result.
