A Russian skier is reportedly undergoing a surgery on her spine after injuring it while training at Sochi during the ongoing Winter Olympics.

Olympic skicross racer Maria Komissarova sustained the injury while training at the PSX Olympic ski cross venue at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park in Sochi, following which she was taken to a hospital specially built for the Olympics, where doctors decided to operate.

According to The Guardian, the team’s head of media said that Komissarova has had a serious injury and is undergoing a difficult operation, adding that the athlete had received medical assistance almost immediately after her crash.

The report mentioned that the 1,200 metre ski cross course at Extreme Park is a medium-pitch slope which features cambered turns, gap jumps, drops and flat sections, adding that the skiers race down the course in groups of four in a test of speed, skill and aggression with the first across the line the winner.

However, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach insisted that the accident had nothing to with conditions at the Extreme Park, adding that it was an unfortunate incident that happened while training. (ANI)
