Russia’s PM Shares Family Pictures of WW2 Veterans

MOSCOW, May 9 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has shared pictures of his relatives who fought in the Second World War.

“On Victory Day! Eternal memory to those who defended the freedom of our Motherland! My grandfathers also experienced war: here is Afanasy Medvedev and Veniamin Shaposhnikov” Medvedev’s note attached to the pictures on Facebook reads.

Within 40 minutes of the pictures being posted on the social networking site Facebook, they had gathered over 1,000 “likes” and over 80 comments, mainly reciprocal congratulations on Victory Day.

May 9 saw celebrations marking victory over the Nazis in WW2 take place right across Russia, with the parade in Moscow being the most prominent. Fireworks at 14 locations will culminate the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow at 10 pm. (18:00 GMT).
