Tbilisi Mayor Faces 23 Years in Jail on Embezzlement Charges

TBILISI, February 23 (RIA Novosti) – Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava has been charged with alleged embezzlement and money laundering and faces up to 23 years in jail if convicted, the mayor’s lawyer said on Saturday. Ugulava, a close ally of President Mikheil Saakashvili, was summoned by the Georgian finance ministry’s investigation service on Saturday and charged with “misspending state funds and legalization of illegal income,” lawyer Gogita Gabaydze said.
