Polls opened in Turkey on Sunday in an election that is expected to see Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) win a third consecutive term in office.
The AKP, which has been in power for eight years, expects to win a majority of votes, form a single-party government, rewrite the constitution and turn Turkey into a republic with presidential rule.
The main challenger for the ruling party in the parliamentary election is the secular Republican People’s Party (CHP).
Opinion polls show that AKP is set to win the election, following eight years of its success in achieving strong economic growth in the country.
