MOSCOW, July 21 (Itar-Tass) —— The Russian-Latvian committee of historians will have its first meeting in Moscow in October or November 2011, spokesman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday. The presidents of the countries agreed to create the committee in December 2010.
The countries “decided to hold the first meeting of the committee in Moscow in October-November 2011,” Lukashevich said. “Russian Academician Alexander Chubaryan, who is the director of the Institute of World History, chairs the committee from Russia, the head of the chair of modern history at the Latvian University, Prof. Helmanis, chairs the committee from Latvia,” the diplomat said.
Russia and Latvia decided to create a special committee of historians, which, according to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, “should analyze the historical events of the past and should receive the access to the archives, which were classified so far.”
