Russia’s aviation watchdog Rosaviatsia is ready to grant permission to Russian and Italian airlines to use charter flights to bring home stranded passengers of the financially embattled airline Wind Jet, Rosaviatsia said on Tuesday.
In order to ensure the Wind Jet passengers get home, Rosaviatsia is working with the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Federal Tourism Agency and the Association of Russian Tour Operators, the watchdog said in a statement.
Wind Jet, a low-cost airline, which offered flights from Italy to 17 destinations, including Moscow, St. Petersburg and Rostov-on-Don, had teetered on the brink of bankruptcy in the past few months.
On early Sunday the company completely ceased flights owing to financial difficulties with fuel purchase. The move left at least 100 tourists from St. Petersburg stranded in Italian airports.
