Body of Missing Climber Found on Elbrus

NALCHIK / MOSCOW, January 15 (RIA Novosti) – The body of mountain climber Artyom Ivanov, who went missing last week, was found on Mount Elbrus on Tuesday, a spokesman for the regional rescue service said.

The search for Ivanov was hampered by bad weather.

“The body was found at about 2:00 p.m. at the height of 5,200 meters. It is currently being brought down,” the source said.

A group of three climbers registered with the local mountain rescue service and then completed an ascent of the western summit of the mountain, the highest in Europe. A search began shortly after contact with the group was lost on January 10.

The first member of the group, a woman, was found uninjured at the height of 4,800 meters. She said the group leader was at 4,200 meters altitude, is unconscious and suffers from leg injuries.

The third man decided not to climb and returned to Moscow.
