Dam breaks down in Grozny flooding 200 houses with over 500 people

MOSCOW, August 27 (Itar-Tass) —— The dam was broken down in Grozny due to heavy rains and a growing water level on the Sunzha River. The broken dam flooded about 200 houses, in which more than 500 people live, the chief press officer of the North Caucasus regional emergency center Kantemir Davydov told Itar-Tass by phone on Saturday.

“The flood situation has worsened on the Sunzha River in the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny and the dam was broken down at 12.35 p.m. Moscow time. Some 188 houses, in which 549 people live, including 129 children, happened to be in the flood area,” Davydov said.

Two schools and a dormitory were assigned for the evacuation of people from the flood area, he said. “100 people were already accommodated at their relatives,” Davydov noted.

The emergency forces, electric power and gas utilities are involved in the cleanup of the flood.

The water level on the river is already on the decline.
