First Direct Election for Governors Slated for October

The first elections of Russia’s regional governors following the return to an electoral system will take place on October 14 in at least two regions, Central Election Commission Vladimir Churov said on Saturday following an election commission representatives meeting.

“The first elections of governors will be held in a minimum of two regions and maybe others, by October 14,” Churov said.

President Medvedev signed the law reintroducing direct elections for regional governors at the start of May. The law comes into force on June 1, 2012. The elections taking place on October 14 will be for governors whose term is due to expire between June and December 2012.
