Lavrov to Attend International Conference on Afghanistan

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov plans to visit Kabul on Thursday to participate in the International Conference on Afghanistan, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

“The key issues to be discussed at the conference are the transfer of responsibility for security in Afghanistan, the process of national reconciliation, the fight against terrorism and drug-related crime, refugees, economic cooperation, confidence building measures in the region in various fields,” said in the ministry.

The International Conference on Afghanistan in Kabul is the follow-up of the Istanbul Regional Conference that was held in November 2011.

20 countries took part in the Istanbul meeting in November. At the conference the parties agreed to provide assistance to Kabul to restore healthcare system and fight drug trafficking, Islamic radicalism and terrorism.
