Police, Civilian Killed in Dagestan Shooting

MAKHACHKALA, May 12 (RIA Novosti) – A police officer and a civilian were gunned down late on Saturday in Buinaksk, a city in Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, a source in the republic’s interior ministry said.

“Unidentified gunmen fired shots at a Lada Priora car with an officer of the Buinaksk police department and a civilian inside. Both died,” the source said.

A special operation is underway to detain the attackers, he added.

The Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
