Russia Set to Expand Ties with Afghanistan

Russia is ready to invigorate its trade and economic ties with Afghanistan and also to help train the country’s security forces, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

“This refers both to the possibility of restoring that which was done by the former Soviet Union, and to new projects,” Putin said during a meeting with his Afghan counterpart, Hamid Karzai.

He congratulated Karzai on Afghanistan being awarded observer status at the Shanghai Security Organization during the two-day SCO summit in Beijing.

Karzai contratulated Putin on his victory in the recent presidential election and expressed hope that “this will lead Russia, [Afghanistan’s] great neighbor, to even greater prosperity.”
