Russian Beats Up Cop on Girlfriend’s Request

A native of North Ossetia was detained in the Moscow region for beating up a traffic policeman who reprimanded his girlfriend for riding a motorcycle without a helmet, police said on Friday.

The young woman, whose name was withheld, met the off-duty officer when she drove to a store in the village of Kraskovo on her bike on Thursday, a spokesman for the regional police said.

When reprimanded by the officer, the woman called her friends on the phone to complain. Upon arriving, one of them proceeded to beat up the policeman, the report said.

Police did not release the officer or the attacker’s name, but said the policeman was 34 while the North Ossetian was in his early twenties.

The attacker was detained within hours. Police are looking into the incident, which was documented on the store’s surveillance cameras, but have not opened a criminal case so far, the spokesman said.
