Siberian FSB Accuses 2 Men of Trying to Sell State Secrets

NOVOSIBIRSK, June 14 (RIA Novosti) – A Siberian man is suspected of having leaked classified information about Russian defense technology to foreign secret services, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Friday.

A resident of Novosibirsk was caught red-handed as he attempted to collect money from a post box for what the FSB suspects was payment for “the materials he had earlier leaked to foreign intelligence,” the statement said.

The suspect, whose name has not been revealed, is a former employee of a local defense firm who is accused of having “contacted foreign agents to provide them with classified information on modernizing military equipment in exchange for financial reward.”

FSB officers have also apprehended another suspect who intended to leak state secrets concerning Russian defense facilities designated for specific wartime assignments in the event of a mobilization to “a Western state,” the statement said.

A local FSB spokesperson said the two suspects could be charged with treason if they repeat their attempts to leak classified data.
