Three Russian Mountain Climbers Die in Georgia

TBILISI, January 10 (RIA Novosti) – Three Russian climbers died on Thursday in an avalanche in Georgia’s Kazbegi mountains, Rustavi-2 television reported citing local authorities.

A child, who was part of the group from Moscow, survived and was taken to a local hospital with frostbite.

“The climbers went on a climb on January 2 and stayed up in the mountains until today. They were hit by an avalanche early this morning,” the head of the Kazbegi municipality, Shalva Yeloshvili, said.

Attempts to find the bodies of the missing mountaineers have been hindered by bad weather.

Georgia’s Kazbegi region borders on Russia’s North Ossetia. Mount Kazbek is one of Georgia’s highest peaks, with an elevation of 16,512 feet (5,033 meters).
