Violence in Syria Subsides Despite Ceasefire Violations – Russia

Violence in Syria is subsiding even despite some violations of the ceasefire deal, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

The ceasefire agreement between the armed Syrian opposition and government troops brokered by UN special envoy Kofi Annan was signed on April 12 but has been repeatedly violated since.

“Although the ceasefire is not being fully observed, and UN monitors have registered violations on both sides as you know, violence in Syria has generally dropped considerably,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich told a briefing in Moscow.

He condemned “certain forces” that are not happy with the positive changes and whose “dramatic assessments” tend to undermine the Annan plan.

Meanwhile, Annan’s representative said in Geneva on Friday that the ceasefire agreement was producing the desired effect, slowly but surely. He urged patience and said the plan implementation would take time as the crisis in Syria has been going on for over a year now.
