Alleged Russian Crime Boss Detained In Spain

MADRID — An alleged leader of Russian’s Orekhovo criminal group was detained on May 5 by Spanish police in a Madrid hotel, RFE/RL’s Russian Service reports.

National Court of Spain officials told RFE/RL that in 2001, Moscow’s Odintsovo district prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for Dmitry Belkin, 30, who is suspected of involvement in more than 30 murders in Russia.

Spanish State Secretary for Security Antonio Camacho said today that “criminal groups in Russia used to consider Spain a country where they could settle easily; now I think they have buried that idea after they realized they are dealing with a country where the appropriate law enforcement structures function actively.”

Belkin, also known as Belok, has reportedly lived at a series of locations in Barcelona and Madrid. He now faces extradition to Russia.
