Downgrades and demos: Greek malaise continues

Filed under: Russian News — Tags: — admin @ 3:45 pm

Greece braces for fresh round of protests as a historical bailout package comes with austerity measures many refuse to stomach. Further rocking the boat, a downgrade on Greece’s sovereign debt has cast a dark cloud over already stormy waters.

In the wake of an unprecedented 237-billion-euro bailout deal signed by eurozone finance ministers Tuesday, Athens was sideswiped by a two notch sovereign debt downgrade – from CCC to C – by international ratings agency Fitch.

A statement released by Fitch said a Greek debt default was “highly likely in the near term,” the Associated Press reports.

Uncertainty continues to linger as the Greek parliament is expected to vote on legislation to implement the bailout deal by the end of the week.

As European stock markets fell and the euro remains shaky over the uncertain nature of the rescue deal, two leading Greek labor unions called for protests in Athens and the country’s second city, Thessaloniki, Wednesday over new salary and pension cuts.

“The measures … are another blow to the pensioners and the social security system in the country. Greeks are blackmailed and no one can tolerate it,” the union said in a statement, AFP reports.

The pro-communist union Pame followed suite by announcing a planned march to Athens’ central Syntagma Square.

Syntagma has been the scene of often violent anti austerity protests over the last two years.

Under the default averting rescue deal, Greece will receive more than 130 billion euro in loans and a 53.5 per cent write down on privately held Greek sovereign debt that amounts to an additional 107 billion euro.

However, the deal hinges on a series of austerity cuts which must be passed before elections are held this April.

It then must be confirmed by a 151-seat majority in the new parliament.

But broad-ranging cuts to the country’s social safety net amid a deeply-entrenched five-year recession that has left unemployment soaring at over 20 per cent could leave the economic burden for ordinary Greeks too much to bear.

FSB should approve governor candidates – Zhirinovsky

Filed under: Russian News — Tags: — admin @ 3:45 pm

Presidential candidate Vladimir Zhirinovsky has suggested that candidates for the posts of Russian regional governors should be approved by the Federal Security Service (FSB), but not by the president.

“Under the new law, governors will be elected. I’m afraid that criminals will get [the posts] through elections again. Not personally, but through their representatives,” the Liberal Democratic party leader said on Wednesday during a televised debate, cites RIA Novosti.

Zhirinovsky suggested that after parliamentary parties propose a list of candidacies for the posts of governors, it could also be agreed with the FSB. Only after that will candidates be able to take part in the elections.

Currently, the majority political party proposes candidates and the head of state picks one. The candidate is then approved by the regional legislative body.

In January, as part of a broad political reform in Russia, President Dmitry Medvedev submitted to the State Duma a bill on direct governor elections.

Profit up for Yandex despite tough Google competition

Russia’s leading search engine operator Yandex has beaten forecasts, demonstrating a 51% increase of its net result in 2011.

The net income of the country’s most popular website operator reached 5.8 billion roubles, or around $193 million, last year. During the last three months the company grew the same 51% year on year to reach 2.1 billion roubles. This was above the 40.5% growth to 1.97 billion, or  about $65.7 million, that analysts had earlier predicted.

The year 2011 was an eventful one for the company, as it first crossed the borders of the CIS and entered the Turkish market.Yandex also had to fight toughening market conditions, with Google’s Chrome search engine tightening competition. This made investors cautious about the company’s shares, Ilya Rachenkov of Investcafe explained.

However, “investments in talent and infrastructure, along with our focus on the needs of users” helped the company to overcome these difficulties, said Arkady Volozh, Chief Executive Officer of Yandex.

“We will continue to develop a broad range of services that complement our core search platform, including maps and personal services on the desktop and on mobile platforms, emphasizing collaboration with our strategic partners,” he added.
