CHELYABINSK, Russia — An appeals court in central Russia has ordered a company to pay 1.3 million rubles ($46,600) to the widow of a worker killed in a plant accident last year, RFE/RL’s Russian Service reports.
An official investigation found the metallurgical plant in Chelyabinsk to be responsible for the accident, which took place in August 2010.
The worker is survived by his wife and two children, who were left without any income and a home mortgage to pay.
The plant’s management initially refused to pay any compensation. But the worker’s widow filed a lawsuit against the plant and won the case.
The appeals court upheld that decision on June 7.
Experts from Chelyabinsk’s Metallurg human rights organization, which represented the widow in court, told RFE/RL that the compensation is the highest ever awarded in such a case by a Russian court.
