Russia is entitled to environmental funding as a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday.
The Kyoto Protocol is a legally binding agreement restricting carbon emissions.
Medvedev instructed Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin to look into the matter.
“As long as we are a party to the Kyoto Protocol we need to get funding for them [environmental programs],” he said.
“We have not fully used the funds that we are entitled to under the Kyoto Protocol.”
Medvedev previously said the country would pull out of the Kyoto agreement if a compromise could not be found concerning the reduction of carbon emissions.
Russia believes that climate change should be tackled by modern technology, not cuts in carbon emissions stipulated by the Kyoto Protocol.
