Officials in Daghestan said gunmen today killed the deputy prisons chief of Russia’s North Caucasus republic, his daughter, nephew, and driver.
The local investigative committee said the gunmen opened fire on a car carrying Daghestan deputy prisons chief Magomed Murtuzaliyev and the other victims.
Investigators said the car caught fire and that “Murtuzaliyev, his daughter, nephew, and driver were all killed.”
On September 22, twin bomb attacks, including a massive car bombing, killed one policemen and wounded dozens of people in the center of the regional capital, Makhachala.
Russia has battled an Islamist insurgency in the mainly Muslim North Caucasus region for two decades, with violence also fueled by poverty and anger at police tactics.
