Russian MPs
consider the efforts by the Ukrainian authorities on giving the Russian
language official status in the country to be insufficient, according to the head of the Duma
Committee on Commonwealth of Independant States Affairs Alexei Ostrovsky, who also said that this was a
campaign promise of Viktor Yanukovych.
Russian MPs
believe that it is a serious mistake, that in the “language politics” of Ukraine, the Russian
language is regarded as the language of a minority.
During the 2001 census nearly
30 percent of Ukrainian citizens said that Russian was their mother tongue.
