Anti-government protests in northern Syria took a violent turn on Saturday with crowds of young people in the port city of Latakiya torching several offices of the local branch of the country’s ruling Ba’ath party.
According to state television reports, nearly 100 people, most of them police officers, are in hospital with knife wounds and other injuries. Local media say about snipers firing at protesters from rooftops.
In the south young protesters are equally aggressive with local security forces using tear gas to break up protesters in the administrative center of Deraa.
