Avalanche in Swiss Alps buries ten people

An avalanche in the Swiss Alps buried ten people on Friday, forcing authorities to launch a major airborne rescue operation.

Police in Switzerland’s Valais canton said that rescuers were rushed by helicopter to the area where the skiers were buried and that they had all been pulled out alive.

A level three avalanche alert was in place across the Alps into Saturday, signalling a “marked danger” in the midst of the high altitude ski season. The highest avalanche alert level is five.

The incident comes just one week after five French hikers were killed and five injured in an avalanche near Bourg St Pierre in the Valais region, which hit 11 people.

One person remains missing from that incident.
