At least seven people were killed and eleven others wounded after a suicide bomber blew himself up at a policeman funeral in Ingushetia in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus region, Ingush Security Council Secretary Akhmed Kotiyev said on Sunday.
“According to preliminary information, the tragedy occurred after a suicide bomber blew himself up at this funeral event” he said.
The suicide bomb attack occurred in the Malgobek district in northwest Ingushetia at a funeral of the policeman who was killed in a shootout with militants on Saturday.
The head of the suspected suicide bomber was found at the scene of the attack, he said.
More than a decade after the end of a war against separatists in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, Russian security forces continue to fight militants in other regions in the area besides Chechnya, including Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia, Dagestan, and North Ossetia. Frequent attacks are staged on security forces, police and civilians.
