European football giants Real Madrid and Chelsea progressed to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals after taking care of Lyon and Copenhagen, respectively.
Real Madrid 3-0 Lyon (4-1 on aggregate)
The French visitors needed to score at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid after a 1-1 draw at home in order to progress, but Jose Mourinho’s men denied them from getting anything on the night and scored three times themselves.
Defender Marcelo produced some stunning dribbling to give Real the lead in the 37th minute.
The Frenchman and former Lyon star, who also got the goal in the first leg, upset his former teammates again, making it 2-0 after the break. And Angel Di Maria set up the final score with 14 minutes remaining, 3-0.
Chelsea 0-0 Copenhagen (2-0 on aggregate)
The Londoners, who are struggling to reach their best form this season, did the minimum that was needed to progress against Copenhagen.
The brought a 2-0 advantage from Denmark and concentrated on defense at home, securing a scoreless draw.
Yury Zhirkov, who remains the only Russian in the Champions League, made Chelsea’s starting lineup and was substituted out in the 75th minute.
Real and Chelsea join Tottenham, Schalke 04, Shakhtar, Barcelona, Inter and Manchester United in the Last 8, with the quarterfinals draw scheduled for Friday, March 18.
