Civil servants stage protests in Serbia

Over 10,000 civil servants, including teachers, doctors, policemen and others, have taken part in a protest action in Serbia. In Belgrade, they marched along the streets to the government building. The demonstrators demanded better labour conditions and paying off wage arrears by the 28th of this month. Serbia has been badly hit by the world financial crisis. Food prices are soaring as a result. The government ahs agreed to meet the demand by the International Monetary Fund to cut back on the GDP deficit by freezing the civil servants’ wages.
