Council of Europe supports local activists

Strategy 31 protestors have been supported by a Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner in their fight for freedom of assembly.

Thomas Hammarberg put together his concerns on Russia’s issues with the right to gather peacefully in a letter posted on the CE’s website, RIA Novosti reported.

Hammarberg also regretted that there were no provisions in Russian law to allow for “spontaneous assemblies”.

The commissioner also expressed concern at arrests made after protests, referring specifically to the 15-day detentions of opposition leaders Boris Nemtsov and Eduard Limonov following a rally on New Year’s Eve last year.
