Dagestani Man Gets 16 Years For Insurgent Attacks

MOSCOW, January 16 (RIA Novosti) – Dagestan’s Supreme Court sentenced an Islamic insurgent to 16 years in prison on Wednesday for involvement in terror attacks in the Dagestani capital of Makhachkala, the Prosecutor General’s office said in a statement.

Authorities say the man, Mogamed Baidiyev, joined the self-proclaimed Caucasus Emirate separatist group in early 2011 and participated in two armed attacks on local security forces in August and September 2011.

The attacks left one policeman dead and 52 others injured, according to the statement, while more than 50 civilians were also injured.

Russia’s volatile, predominantly Islamic North Caucasus region has for years been plagued by a low-intensity insurgency in which local security forces often clash with armed groups.
