Denmark closes its borders – legally justified, but no threat for EU integration.

Denmark’s unilateral decision to reintroduce border control has sparked mixed reactions in EU countries. On the one hand, many consider this decision a reasonable measure aimed at preventing an influx of illegal immigrants; on the other hand such a decision seems to contradict the fundamental ideas of European integration. Mikhail Biryukov, head of the legal department at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, in an interview with the chief editor of RussiaProfile.org Andrei Zolotov, Jr. claims that Denmark had a legal basis to take such decision. He also asserts that the EU will overcome the current crisis of European integration, which he believes is an inevitable part of the ups and downs of its development.
