The Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations (FANO) has announced plans to establish a Russian-Chinese Research Centre at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk, TASS reported.
“In Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk, we’re planning to create a Russian-Chinese research center, aimed at developing research in the field of nuclear physics,” said a spokesperson for FANO. “This was discussed at a meeting attended by presidential aide Andrei Fursenko and the institue’s leadership. The center will be the first FANO mega-science project in the region, the purpose of which is to expand scientific cooperation between Russia and BRICS nations.”
FANO noted that China is simultaneously preparing the launch of two research programs in the area of nuclear physics. One of these will relates to the construction of a Higgs Boson particle generator, similar to the Large Hadron Collider operated by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) near Geneva, Switzerland.
As for the joint Russian-Chinese research facility, FANO declined to elaborate on exactly what kind of research would be carried out, saying that this is yet to be defined and would be the subject of future discussions.
Alexei Vasiliev, Scientific Secretary of the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, told TASS that the institute already has a number of framework agreements in place with the Chinese, that will see the two sides cooperate in current and future experiments. According to FANO, any cooperation will initially be based on these agreements.
