GROZNY, Russia — The father of two teenage girls shot dead on June 27 in northeastern Chechnya has been taken into custody as a suspect, RFE/RL’s North Caucasus Service reports.
The bodies of the two girls, Zhamila, 14, and Milana, 19, were found in the yard of a private house in their home village of Borozdinovskaya on June 27.
Their father, Ruslan Musayev, told RFE/RL on June 28 that he has no idea why they were killed.
The motive for the murders remains unclear.
The head of the local administration, Isa Guchigov, suggested to RFE/RL that it might have been an “honor killing” but provided no evidence to warrant such a conclusion.
