Journalists covering the G8 summit in France have noticed that the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozi, Carla Bruni, showed clear signs of pregnancy.
While the leaders of the world’s eight richest countries discussed the outcome of the nuclear crisis in Japan and the situation in the Middle East at the seaside resort of Deauville, their spouses gathered to discuss illiteracy and AIDS.
Bruni, 43, who is fiercely guarding her privacy and refusing to comment on pregnancy rumors, wore an uncharacteristically loose white dress and a long black fleece jacket at a brief photo session with other first ladies.
Journalists watching the photo shoot on a big TV screen at the G8 press center noticed that Bruni’s belly was clearly rounded and started to cheer and applaud.
Last week, Sarkozy’s father told a German newspaper that Bruni was expecting a child, while some media rumors suggested that she might be expecting twins.
Bruni is already a mother to a 10-year-old boy, Aurelien. His father was her ex-lover, the Paris philosopher Raphael Enthoven.
Nicolas Sarkozy has three sons, Pierre, 26, and Jean, 24, from his first marriage to Marie-Dominique Culioli, and Louis, 14, with his second wife, Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz.
