Pro-Gaddafi forces have overrun the port city of Misurata some 200 kilometres east of Tripoli.
Reports speak about heavy tank fire in the city centre and about Libyan warships in the harbour.
Misurata has been under a prolonged siege, which caused numerous civilian casualties.
The city is without communications, food or adequate water supply.
