German health authorities have identified locally-grown vegetable sprouts as the source of a bacterial outbreak that has killed at least 30 people.
The head of the Robert Koch Institute national disease control center, Reinhard Burger, said there was strong evidence that sprouts grown from beans or peas caused the E. coli infection.
The infection, which caused more than 3,000 people to fall ill, has been focused in Germany. The first cases were registered on May 2 but the rate of infections has begun to decline.
A previous German warning about eating cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuce led to massive economic losses for European vegetable growers.
Russia — Europe’s biggest vegetable market — imposed a total ban on imports.
