Russian ice hockey player Alexander Galimov, one of two survivors of last week’s plane crash which killed 43 people, has died in hospital.
Moscow’s Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery confirmed the 26-year-old Lokomotiv Yaroslavl player died this morning from the burns suffered in the crash.
“On 12 September, in the morning, despite continuing therapy using all possible contemporary treatment, Alexander Galimov died from severe burns in the burn centre of the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery,” read the statement, which was posted on the Russian Hockey Federation website.
A statement from the federation added: “We express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Alexander, and all to whom his fight for life has remained the last hope in this terrible tragedy.”
The tragedy occurred last Wednesday when a Yak-42 aircraft crashed as it left Tunoshna airport near the city of Yaroslavl, on the Volga River north-east of Moscow, en route to Lokomotiv’s opening game of the Kontinental Hockey League season in Minsk, Belarus.
The plane was carrying the team with a total of 45 passengers on board, comprising 37 passengers and eight crew members.
Aleksandr Sizov, the plane’s engineer, is now the only survivor of the crash.
