IMF Chief To Meet With Russian President

Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is due to hold talks in Moscow today with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Russian news agencies quote the Kremlin as saying the talks are expected to focus on the European debt crisis and on ways to reform the global financial system.

Lagarde’s activities in the Russian capital are also expected to include meetings at the Russian Finance Ministry and central bank.

Russia, which owes no money to the IMF and is currently a major shareholder in the global lending organization, has not offered direct assistance to help the eurozone emerge from its debt crisis, preferring instead to channel any assistance through the IMF.

Resource-rich Russia relies on demand from European countries for a significant portion of its energy exports.
