Synchronized swimmer Natalia Ishchenko has brought Russia its first gold medal at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai.
The 25-year-old claimed her third successive world championship swimming solo technical title.
The Russian scored 98.30 points, beating home favorite Huang Xuechen by two points. Spain’s Andrea Fuentes grabbed bronze, with 95.30 points.
“I think my opponents are waiting for me to retire,” Ishchenko told RIA-Novosti news agency. “However, nobody has told me to my face yet. Now the main motivation for me is London 2012, after which I’m likely to finish my career.”
“I’m basically satisfied with my performance today. But it’s too early to relax. There are still many days of competition remaining,” she added.
The 11-time world champion, Ishchenko, is also competing in the pairs and team competition in China, with Russian fans hoping she’ll add more golds to her haul.
