Lawyer demands release for Egyptian ex-PM

The lawyer of Egyptian former prime minister Ahmed Nazif on Saturday demanded that his defendant was released from custody during the period of legal proceedings, the MENA news agency said.

“All of the conditions to release Nazif are in hand: he has been prohibited from leaving Egypt for other countries and his accounts are frozen,” lawyer Nagib Vagih said.

Nazif, who is widely regarded to be one of the most efficient modern Egyptian leaders, was arrested on April 10 – two months after the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. Nazif was charged with wasting public money and profiteering. Along with several ex-ministers and parliamentary speakers he was put behind bars.
