Mayor scraps Luzhkov plan for Moscow waste-processing plant

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin signed an order canceling a previous order by ex-mayor Yury Luzhkov to build a recycling complex in the east of the capital, a source in city government said on Friday.

“The order of creating a waste-processing complex has been canceled due to the inability of locating it at the appointed address,” the source said.

According to him, the creation of the waste-processing complex was supposed to build enterprises for the processing of construction waste, waste bitumen roofing materials and creating companies for sorting and primary processing of bulky waste.

The problem of garbage disposal is acute in Moscow. Every year some five million tons of rubbish is collected in the capital. According to city authorities, soon there will be no space for waste disposal in landfills.
