Over 20 Mexican activists from various political movements staged a rally on Tuesday in front of the Russian embassy protesting against Russia’s recognition of newly-elected Mexican President Pena Nieto.
Nieto, a candidate from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), won the July 1 presidential election in the country, but officially the name of the new president will be announced in September and starting on December 1 the president must assume the post. In early July, Russian President Vladimir Putin already congratulated Nieto with the victory and expressed hope for future cooperation with him.
“We can not allow the country to be run by the president, who was elected unfairly, who was a product of media cultivation and election fraud,” one of the rally organizers said.
He said the Russian embassy in Mexico is not the only one, where protests against the recognition of Nieto are held. The rallies are also staged particularly at the embassies of the United States, Germany, Brazil, Italy and some other countries, which also recognized the election of Nieto.
Many Mexicans, he said, believe that Nieto bribed voters, violated election process and excessively used media sources during his election campaign.
Nearly 80 million Mexicans were eligible to cast ballots in July 1 vote and some 31,400 monitors, including around 700 international observers from 66 countries, monitored the polls.
Incumbent President Felipe Calderon, who has been in power since 2006, was barred by the constitution from seeking a second term.
